Judge’s ruling outlining how insurance companies go about denying claims for CFS and other illnesses
The CDC's working definition of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome written in 1994 sometimes called the Fukuda definition
Michael C. Sharpe- Sharpe is one of the authors of CDC’s 1994 CFS definition. He has extensive ties to disability insurance companies. He sits on committees, writes papers, and does research working to prove that CFS is a mental illness.
Here are examples of Sharpe’s association with disability insurance companies. As you read these, remember this man helped create the current definition of CFS used by the CDC.
~Monetary disclosure forms submitted by Sharpe required for his participation in a DSM5 committee
~Sharpe's article written for Unum corporate report. Unum is one of the largest disability insurance company in the world.
An easier to read version:
Simon Wessely –Wessley was on the working committee that developed the CDC 1994 definition His work is cited five times in the document. He sits on committees, writes papers, and does research working to prove that CFS is a mental illness. He opened a business that sells a CFS treatment program to insurance companies. He has been advisor to the British government's health insurance agency working to prevent the recognition of CFS as a physical illness to prevent the payment of claims. He is considered the leader of the "It's in your head" propaganda scheme, which is often called the Wesselyian school. The below link is a nice summary of Wessely's anti-CFS activities:
~Wessely's article written for a Unum corporate report where he says doctors "collude" with patients to help them go on disability
~Download of a document where Wessley calls Chronic Fatigue Syndrome a form of hysteria. Note, this site automatically downloads the document.
~Wessley believes CFS patients make themselves sick.
"Symptoms and disability of CFS are perpetuated predominantly by dysfunctional illness beliefs and coping behaviours. These beliefs and behaviours interact with the patient's emotional and physiological state and interpersonal situation to form self-perpetuating vicious circles of fatigue and disability..."
